Petrokrepost’ (Shlisselburg)

The fortress, located on a small island on the Neva and famous under the names of Oreshek, Noteburg, Shlisselburg and Petrokrepost’, has a century-old history. The territory around the Neva was a scene of Swedish-Russian battles in the 13-17th centuries; and the fortress, built by order of Prince Yuri, was regarded “a key” to the domination over the north of Russia. In the 19th century, the fortress was used as a prison. The defence of the fortress during World War II is a heroic episode of its history. Today on the territory of the fortress, the historical museum is situated.
